I did not know who Sylvia Earle was before watching this video but I was quite amazed by her. I think that she has lived an extraordinary life, and anyone who takes such a passionate stand for our planet is someone to be admired.
It is sickening to think that 25% of our natural coral reefs have disappeared in recent years, and we are entirely to blame. Humans have invaded and over-indulged in our oceanic resources, destroying both ecosystems and wildlife populations. Sylvia Earle has tirelessly started and been involved in projects to help preserve what is left of our beautiful oceans and their inhabitants. It seems to me that at the heart of all of her efforts is the simple idea that educating our selves and being more aware of our planet’s needs is the first step in making it a better place.
Mission Blue is a project she began with hopes to establish legally protected areas of our oceans in order to begin the recovery process they so desperately need. Since the project began in 2009, over 50 “Hope Spots” have been recognized worldwide. Slowly, but surely, there can be progress made to rebuild the natural wonder that keeps our planet thriving. For someone with so many impressive accomplishments, the greatest thing about Sylvia Earle is that she is just as motivated as ever and I have no doubt that she will spend the rest of her life fighting just as fiercely for the sake of the sea.
“97% of earth’s water is there. It’s the blue heart of the planet — we should take care of our heart. It’s what makes life possible for us. We still have a really good chance to make things better than they are. They won’t get better unless we take the action and inspire others to do the same thing. No one is without power. Everybody has the capacity to do something.”
