Vanishing of the Bees : Factory Farming

Factory farms dominate U.S. food production, employing abusive practices that maximize agribusiness profits at the expense of the environment, our communities, animal welfare, and even our health. Animals on factory farms are regarded as commodities to be exploited for profit. They undergo painful mutilations and are bred to grow unnaturally fast and large for the purpose of maximizing meat, egg, and milk production for the food industry. Their bodies cannot support this growth, which results in debilitating and painful conditions and deformities. The factory farming industry puts incredible strain on our natural resources. The extreme amount of waste created by raising so many animals in one place pollutes our land, air, and water. Residents of rural communities surrounding factory farms report high incidents of illness, and their property values are often lowered by their proximity to industrial farms. Also antibiotics are used extensively on factory farms, which can create drug-resistant bacteria and put human health at risk. Places like Sarasota are starting to let people keeps their own chickens, a good start in the fight against factory farming, but not nearly enough.

  1. This post really made me question haw far we’re willing to go until the consequences get too extreme. It’s not just about altering the genetics of the animals we eat, or polluting the planet with – unnatural – over production. It has come to not caring what the side effects to people and society may be.
    I guess it’s just interesting because it raises the question, when animals are gone, what will they use next.

    Sorry, I know it’s a bit dark.

  2. The question of the existence of Factory Farming may be dated back to the 19th century, during the Industrial Revolution. Due the increase of mass production in the factories, more and more people have left the farm fields to the cities for new working opportunities. This revolution has gradually changed the central life of people from the farm fields to the new industrial life.

    However, food production has come to be a question for this new generation. The problem is, when less people able to supply food to the community, less food will be able to give to people. In order to prevent this future starvation, the farm factory is therefore invented. By using the minimum amount of people to produce the greatest amount of food for supplying the community. Hence, the problem of supplying food to the community may seem to be solved until now.

    One of the reasons why the community is not able to refuse the farm factory foods is because the request of foods from the community is much greater than the farm factory problems. For example, 23 million chickens were killed each day in United States. Chicken normally need six months in order to reach the selling standards. However, neither the community nor the business is willing to wait for six months eating a piece of breast from chicken. Therefore, by shortening the raising time into three months, the food factory not only gaining more profits from the community, but also increasing the satisfaction of the community even though people notice this unnatural supply of the chicken.

    As a result, even though people notice these negative effects and dangerous possibilities for eating foods from factory farming, they will not easily give up these foods as these are the most convenient and fast foods they can get. People will not be able to feed themselves well in this modern industrial world if they didn’t focus on farm field life, and most important, own a land. The request of foods from the community helps to continue the growth of the farming factories.
