Thoughts from the Ted Talk

There were so many thoughts going through my head while watching that awesome Ted talk. It boggled my mind that people would feed fish chicken. It’s a fish, when would a fish ever eat a chicken in the wild. This made me think about the Purdue chicken commercial. The commercial states, you are what you eat. They say they feed their chicken an all-vegetarian diet of corn and marigolds. It’s a chicken! Chickens are herbivore by nature why would you feed them anything else. I don’t eat meat but it makes me so upset that farmers would do this to the animals and to their consumers.

Another thought that went through my mind was the cooking technique of molecular gastronomy. I am a huge foodie and this technique will make you think of food differently. From foam bread, powdered olive oil, dried ice desserts, to passion fruit pearls.  The things they do with food are so fascinating but is it really okay to eat? Is it okay to eat liquid nitrogen, malodextrin, hydrocolloids, transylutaminase, xanthan, and carrageenan? All of these ingredients are biological in origin but it still makes you wonder what is really in them.

  1. In regards to your first paragraph, I just thought I would let you know that chickens are actually omnivores, not herbivores. Chickens (at least in the wild, or chickens that can forage for their own food at the very least) typically eat a healthy mixture of insects, worms, nuts, grains, and sometimes even larger prey like lizards! Thus, when you see companies with commercials that pat themselves on the back for feeding their chickens an all-vegetarian, corn-laiden diet it is most likely not the best thing for the chickens (and thereby the consumers of said chickens). That is not to say that this is worse than feeding fishes chicken, but rather that large food corporations constantly misadvertize the benefits of their practices. It is unfortunate. Great post regardless!
